Our Story
At Old Wood Building, every beam, every joint, and every line of craftsmanship says something about what we value: quality, beauty, honesty, and faith.
Our hope is that the homes we build to do more than stand—we want them to mean something. To make people feel grounded and create spaces that will be loved, lived in, and passed down.
Let us help you build the legacy home you've always wanted, and that will be loved for generations to come.
OUR Founder
Before Old Wood Building, I spent nearly a decade as a filmmaker telling stories that moved people. I loved the art of storytelling—how something well-crafted could inspire and outlast its moment. But as my family grew and life shifted, I realized I wanted to create something tangible—something that would endure.
A mentor of mine, named Mike Bailey introduced me to the world of historic restoration and timber work. Through him, I learned that true craftsmanship isn’t just about skill, it’s about courage, faith, and meaning. His encouragement led me to take a leap of faith and start Old Wood Building.
What began as a small step into the unknown became a lifelong calling. Old Wood Building exists to craft legacy homes and heritage structures that honor the past and inspire the future. This work is still storytelling—only now, the stories are built in timber and stone, meant to stand for generations.

What Our Clients Say
- Charles McRaven, Author of The Classic Hewn-Log House
Since my first log cabin restoration in 1946 I have done hundreds, including quite a number of new ones in the historic Appalachian tradition. I have had many, many craftsmen (and women) work with me, learn from me, many to go on to success on their own. I have known fast but sloppy, good but slow, only a handful of both good and fast. And even fewer with the overall knowledge and skill this fine craft deserves.
But I have never known a log cabin restorer/stonemason as professional, as skilled, as painstaking and attuned to the material as Drew Layman. He and his crew have an appreciation for the original craftsmanship that is knowledgeable, dedicated, and devoted to detail, planning, the overall picture and executing it, that is beyond compare. Whether it involves replacements, major reconstruction, or a complete takedown, relocation and complete rebuild, there is just one way his Old Wood Building does it: right.
Drew is a problem solver, and done correctly, there are always multiple problems. There is the chinking method he uses, one I perfected back in the ‘60s (and discovered that noted architect E. Fay Jones had also developed. We compared notes). Done wrong, which it almost universally was, chinking can rot a cabin in a few years; done right it will outlast the logs. Drew also corrects ‘good enough’ mistakes and gives his clients a finer finished job.
I would, and do, recommend him and his crew for any and all pioneer building work, and am gratified that such a craftsman is carrying on the tradition to which I dedicated most of my life. Well done, Drew!
